Trans Can HWY #19: Aufwiedersehen

Two years ago this past August, my mother and I ventured on a cross country trek in my brother’s Jeep across Canada. We drove west from southwestern Ontario to Vancouver, BC over the course of two weeks, and then down to northern California to meet up with the men in our family. The following are taken from emails I wrote to family and friends.

Day 19: Saturday, August 18, 2012

California forest fire smoke

California forest fire smoke

In River Inn at Susanville, CA and have driven in the dark, on empty through smells of wafted smoke from wildfires occurring 15 km away. Prior to the sun setting, we were admiring the greyish purple colour that became the skies due to the smoke. Luckily made it to Susanville and got the LAST room in our fourth motel we looked at. There’s some kind of carnival or fair going on, and because of all the firemen, there are almost no vacancies anywhere… and all the cots have been sequestered, so I am sleeping on the floor of a motel room in my camping gear. I don’t mind.

Bye bye

Bye bye

Earlier today we said goodbye to everyone. Jonathan is going north up to Vancouver to visit and meet up with some friends. Jason and Uncle Peter are going south along the PCH to visit our Cali family. And dad came with us. We backtracked a bit to get to Shady Cove, Oregon to buy a small trailer from a man dad found in the classifieds. Spent a few hours in the searing heat (100+ degrees, where on the coast at Crescent City was 57 degrees F) drilling holes into the trailer to prep it for dad’s bike – to hold it in place. Jim and his family were incredibly nice and helpful. Characters to be sure, but sweethearts.
