Surviving the winter blahs: do as the Danish do

Cozy reading

I read a Chatelaine article that reinforces my urge to spend all day snuggled in a throw, sipping tea, and watching the sh** out of Netflix (which, as you know, goes against my stop watching Netflix rant—so maybe I’ll alternate episodes of Marco Polo and Love with finishing that dang Salman Rushdie novel).

You see, apparently the Danes are ranked third (to our fifth) on the 2015 World Happiness Report, and when it comes to unpleasant weather—I’m thinking winter—they have it all figured out. They even have given the it a name. Hygge (hoo-guh). The article quotes Helen Russell, author of The Year of Living Danishly and explains hygge “is the complete absence of anything annoying or emotionally overwhelming. It’s being surrounded by calm relaxing things.”

So, I’m going to light some candles, play some calm instrumental music, and practice yoga, before I get into my sweatpants and snuggle up in my throw pillows and blankets.

Ah, winter. You allow me to veg so peacefully.
