The time has come. I am going portaging this Canadian long weekend. The last time I camped was a few years ago. The last time I portaged was a few nevers ago. This will be my first time and I am jumping-out-of-my-skin excited.
I’ve grown up in two worlds. One a desert kingdom, the other a lush, vast open swath of land.* Both offered plenty of room to park your nylon. Though, one type of camping was a whole lot warmer than the other. And offered up camels, snakes and scorpions. Oh my! And the odd shark (that time we camped along the Red Sea, eh Jonathan?).
Regardless, I have had my fair share of camping experience and my excitement for this upcoming trip goes to show, just how much camping is a part of me. Or at least, I like to share a part of it with me.
Bought most of my gear last weekend. I feel like a real grown-up now, not having to bug the parentals to raid their wares. None of this, “Moooommmm, can I borrow _____, and _____, and 10 of _____.” Ha.
MEC was my supplier of choice, granted a bit pricey, but man was it fun shopping – a kid in a candy store kind of shopping. I’m a proud owner of a headlamp now. Woot.
The big spends? My very own tent, naturally. The Wanderer A/C. A tent I know would have been amazing to have had when we were camping all those many moons ago in the Saudi peninsula: the A/C refers to the mesh it is mostly made up of. Perfect for catching a desert breeze and watching the night sky in all its glory.
The time has really come. Must finish baking those cookies for all that snacking I plan on accomplishing.
Peace out city and internet. Hello Algonquin and paddling.
